3.12.12. Story time with 1st and 2nd grades / 1º y 2º cursos

On Monday, 3rd of December, at the school library, the 1st and 2nd grade kids read and enjoyed three stories: Monkey and Me, Walking Through the Jungle and The Gruffalo . We had read Monkey and Me the last time and it was great to see we all remembered it and almost knew the text by heart already! Walking Through the Jungle is also about animals and guessing which one is coming next and everyone enjoyed that too. Then, we read The Gruffalo. This is a story with a lot more text but it has so much rhythm and repetition that, with a few exaggerated gestures from the reader, we all understood more or less what was going on. I think we all had fun!

El lunes, 3 de diciembre, en la biblioteca escolar, los chicos y chicas de primero y segundo leyeron y disfrutaron de tres cuentos: Monkey and Me, Walking Through the Jungle y El Grúfalo en su verisón original en inglés. Monkey and Me lo habíamos leído ya la última vez y fue genial ver que todos nos acordábamos y nos lo sabíamos casi de memoria ya! Walking Through the Jungle también va de animales y de adivinar qué animal saldrá en la siguiente página y fue también divertido. Luego leímos El Grúfalo. Este cuento tiene bastante más texto pero tiene tanto ritmo y repetición que, con unos pocos gestos exagerados por parte de la lectora, todos comprendimos más o menos qué estaba pasando. ¡Creo que lo pasamos bien!

3.12.12. Story Time with 6th grade / 6º curso

On Monday, 3rd of December, at the school library, the 6th grade kids read and enjoyed three stories: The Gruffalo, Beware of the Frog and The Garden of Abdul Gasazi. This was the first reading in this class so it was a bit about gauging their level of understanding and seeing what we could read together and what might be slightly above their level of understanding. We all enjoyed all three stories I think. The Gruffalo is a classic that is enjoyable for all ages. Beware of the Frog is plays with humour and surprise very effectively, and I'd say it really caught everyone's attention. The Garden of Abdul Gasazi was the longest and most "difficult" of the three to follow. Still, everyone followed and everyone understood the story, more or less. Perhaps we found the group's level of understanding limit there, so now I have a better idea of what I can take along next time. I'm looking forward to it! 

El lunes, 3 de diciembre, en la biblioteca escolar, los chicos y chicas de sexto leyeron y disfrutaron de tres cuentos: El Grúfalo y Cuidado con la rana en sus versiones en inglés y The Garden of Abdul Gasazi. Esta era la primera vez que leía a esta clase así que se trataba más bien de medir su nivel de comprensión y ver qué podíamos leer juntos y qué podría estar un poco por encima de su nivel de compresión. Creo que todos disfrutamos de los tres cuentos. El Grúfalo es un clásico del que disfrutan todas las edades. Cuidado con la rana juega con el humor y la sorpresa de forma muy eficaz y diría que mantuvo la atención de todos y gustó bastante. The Garden of Abdul Gasazi fue el cuento más largo y más "difícil" de seguir de los tres. Aun así, todos seguimos el cuento y todos lo entendimos, más o menos. Quizás encontramos el límite de de nivel de comprensión del grupo con este cuento, así que ahora ya tengo una idea más formado de qué cuentos puedo traer la próxima vez. ¡Me apetece mucho repetir!

29.10.12. Story Time with 3rd grade / 3º curso

On Monday 29th October, at the school library, the 3rd grade kids read and enjoyed four stories: Caps for Sale,  We're Going on a Bear Hunt, The Gruffalo and Dear Zoo. I think the favourite was The Gruffalo (some of the children knew the Spanish version so it was already familiar), although We're Going on a Bear Hunt was also a hit. Dear Zoo was not originally intended for this class but they saw it peeping out of the bag and fancied trying it. They also liked it.

El lunes 29 de octubre, en la biblioteca escolar, los chicos y chicas de tercero leyeron y disfrutaron de cuatro cuentos: Vamos a cazar un oso, Se venden gorras y El grúfalo y en sus versiones en inglés y Dear Zoo. El favorito creo que fue El grúfalo (algunos niños ya conocían la versión en castellano así que les resultaba familiar), aunque Vamos a cazar un oso no se quedó atrás. Dear Zoo no iba a leerlo en principio a los de tercero, pero lo vieron asomándose de la bolsa y quisieron probar. También gustó.

26.10.2012. Story Time with 4 and 5 year olds

On Friday 26th October, in the 4 year old classroom, the 4 and 5 year old classes at the school, read and enjoyed three stories: Monkey and Me, Dear Zoo and Owl Babies.  For Dear Zoo, all the children took turns to help lift the flaps. We had to read it a couple of times for everyone to have a chance to join in. But the absolute favourite was Monkey and Me. We also read it a second time and by then, most children were joinin in: Monkey and me, monkey and me, monkey and me, we went to see, we went to see some... PENGUINS! 

El viernes 26 de octubre, en la clase de 4 años, los niños y niñas de 4 y 5 años leyeron y disfrutaron de tres cuentos: Monkey and Me, Dear Zoo y Owl Babies. En Dear Zoo, todos se turnaron para levantar las solapas. Tuvimos que leerlo un par de veces para que todos tuvieran la oportunidad de participar. Pero el favorito indiscutible fue Monkey and Me. También lo leímos una segunda vez y para entonces ya la mayoría de los niños lo estaban recitando: Mi mono y yo, mi mono y yo, mi mono y yo fuimos al zoo, fuimos al zoo a veeeer.... ¡PINGUINOS! (pero en inglés, ¡claro!)

26.10.12. Story Time with 4th grade / 4º curso

On Friday 26th October, at the school library, the 4th grade kids read and enjoyed three stories: We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Caps for Sale and  The Gruffalo. We then had a vote to see which one we wanted to read again and The Gruffalo won hands down. So we read it again and stopped at some of the vocabulary (scrambled snake, roasted fox, owl ice cream). 

El viernes 26 de octubre, en la biblioteca escolar, los chicos y chicas de cuarto leyeron y disfrutaron de tres cuentos: Vamos a cazar un oso, Se venden gorras y El grúfalo en sus versiones en inglés. Luego votamos para ver cuál queríamos leer de nuevo y ganó El grúfalo con diferencia. Así que lo leímos otra vez y nos detuvimos en algunas cosas de vocabulario (zorro al horno, helado de búho, revuelto de serpiente). 

While Ana (the 4th grade English teacher and school principal) went to do some photocopies, we thought about what books in particular or subjects they were interested in, so that we could bring books suited to our interests. One student suggested next time we might try reading Shrek (the original book by William Steig the film was loosely based on). We all thought it was a good idea and, although some of the vocabulary is quite hard in the original Shrek, we'll give it a try. It's a great book and I'm sure it'll be fun.

Mientras Ana (la profesora de inglés de cuarto y directora del colegio) hacía unas fotocopias, pensamos en qué libros en concreto o qué temas les interesaban, para poder traer libros que pudieran gustarnos especialmente. Una alumna sugirió que la próxima vez podíamos intentar leer Shrek (el libro original de William Steig en el que se basó la película). A todos nos pareció buena idea y aunque el vocabulario de Shrek es bastante difícil, lo vamos a probar. Es un libro genial y seguro que será divertido.
